Somewhere in Time was a time travel-slash-tragic romance movie released on October 3, 1980. It would be the first of many time-travel themed movies that would explode in the eighties such as Back to the Future, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. It was directed by Jeannot Szwarc, written by Richard Matheson (the movie was based on Matheson’s 1975 science fiction novel Bid Time Return), and starred Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. It was filmed on location at The Grand Hotel, 1 Grand Ave., Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA. (imdb.com) The movie was initially received with poor reviews and a lukewarm box office showing; however, over time, the movie has become a cult classic. “Somewhere in Time enjoys ‘cult classic’ status. It is one of the only three single motion pictures which can boast of a fan club dedicated entirely to it, and the other two, Gone With The Wind and Wizard of Oz are heady company.” (somewhereintime.tv) The Grand Hotel, where the movie was filmed forty years ago, still holds an extremely popular yearly Somewhere in Time weekend where people watch the movie, go to discussion panels, and enjoy an Edwardian-themed ball. Over the years, crew and cast members, including Jane Seymour, have attended the event at The Grand Hotel in Michigan.
