“1979” was the popular single off of The Smashing Pumpkins’ third studio album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Released in 1996, this alternative rock track made it up to #12 on the US Billboard charts and #16 on the UK charts (Songfacts). Lead singer Billy Corgan wrote the song about transitioning from childhood into adulthood. The song was nominated for two Grammies, one for Record of the Year and the other for Best Rock Performance. “1979” still stands as one of the most iconic singles for the Smashing Pumpkins.
